SUMMER OF QUANTUM RECAP

The Laboratory for Physical Sciences (LPS) Qubit Collaboratory (LQC) hosted its inaugural, free Summer of Quantum Workshop July 12 – 23, 2021. Fifty-four (54) national and international participants an received introduction to quantum computing from algorithms to physical implementations, including quantum tutorials and interactive, hands-on projects led by leading quantum scientists from LPS and beyond. On average, all participants improved their proficiency in quantum information science skills. According to an attendee, “This [was] an exceptional workshop. The virtual challenge was handled brilliantly.” The workshop organizers look forward to hosting an even better workshop next year.

RESEARCH PAPER: GAPPED FRUSTRATION-FREE LOCAL SPIN CHAINS

In addition to many other challenges, standard qubit designs require rapid pulses of laser light, electrical currents, or similar control signals. Adiabatic quantum computation is an alternative vision that obviates the need for rapid pulses. It is known that adiabatic quantum computation can be just as powerful as the standard designs for a computer held at zero temperature.

QUANTUM RECRUITMENT IN GOVERNMENT

The Laboratory for Physical Sciences (LPS) hosted a workshop on Quantum Recruitment in Government with approximately forty participants, representing a variety of government agencies, federally funded research and development centers, and a university affiliated research center.  Speakers discussed their recruitment activities in quantum information science (QIS) and how successful these are. Challenges in recruitment and retainment were highlighted, and a panel of government hiring experts revealed what is being done to address these challenges. A panel also shared their personal journeys into government careers. The workshop ended on an optimistic note, with a sense that the hiring challenges are solvable, and the US can maintain its leadership in QIS.
